Eden and Tracy enter the incident room at five o’clock to prepare for the briefing.

“What about the journalist and photographer?” asks Tracy.

“I think they can stew till later. Let the custody sergeant know we’ll interview them at eight o’clock, so they can have their solicitor present.”

At six o’clock, the major incident room is packed.

“Okay, everyone. As you know, this afternoon, we were called out to the Black Barn Farm Mobile Home Park in Pickstone. We discovered the body of Liam Hurst, age forty-eight.

“The report came in via a 999 call from a local newspaper reporter and photographer. We have a witness who states he saw the couple disturb the crime scene before we arrived, presumably in the interest of capturing better photos. We currently have them in custody, and I will interview them later.

“Everything we have found points to Mr Hurst being the seventh victim of the killer. I’m sure you’re all aware of what the local newspaper has dubbed him: the Trentbridge Terminator. All we know is that the killer leaves his calling card at each crime scene. A white ribbon with a white card attached and a single letter of the alphabet written on each. So far, we have G, E, L, S, W, another G, and now P.

“What the hell all this means, we haven’t been able to work out. We haven’t found any fingerprints or DNA that we can use. We’re still checking, but, as yet, we have no apparent connections between any of the victims: different ages, social backgrounds and interests. Some of them are active on social media and a couple wouldn’t know what Facebook is, even if it hit them on the head.

“As you can imagine, I’m getting a lot of heat from the top brass. So I’m open to even the wildest ideas if any of you have anything.”

Eden scans the room. He’s hoping someone will come up with something they can use. Something to move the investigation forward.

But he is not surprised when every single person in the room remains silent.
